Here are some pictures from our celebration.

This term, the students on Team 5 are working with two professors from Auckland University to learn about Genomics. So far, we have gained an understanding about what genomics is, discussed the scientific view of the Tree of Life and we have begun to explore the Fragile Web of Life.

We were very lucky on Monday of this week because our very own scientist, Dr. Thierry from Auckland University's Medical School, came in to visit each class and share some special living things that he recently found in a rock pool in the northern part of New Zealand.

For our PENN video this week, we decided to share a it of our fun with Dr Thierry and share a few things that we have discovered.

Welcoming ERO to Pt England

This term, we had the ERO team come into to assess our school and our lovely Team 5 students had the honour of welcoming the team to our school as part of our daily morning assembly.

As a team, we begin each day with all five classes meeting together in our Street (shared space) area. We begin with our version of a traditional Maori pōwhiri.  Once the students recited our school karakia and one of our students shared their mihi, Mr. Burt brought the ERO team up to introduce themselves to the students.

It was great for the students to understand what the ERO team does and who was a part of our team this year since they would be around the school for the week.  We are so excited to see what ERO has to say about our amazing school.

This morning, the students of Team 5 had an opportunity to show off their Geometry skills by taking a pre-test.  This test will be used by the teachers to help with planning for upcoming Geometry lessons and to help show the students exactly what they have learnt over the time we study Geometry this term.

Hope's Māui Post

During literacy this year, some of the students in Room 1's Paua group read the story Maui.   Students were asked to complete a learning task about how an author uses words to paint a picture.  They were then asked to read an article about the Māui dolphins in New Zealand before writing and recording a VLOG post.

Here is Hope's blog post.  Please check out her blog and leave her a comment.

WALT: Recognise words and phrases that "show" not "tell".
Task description: We read the book Māui and did a task for it, we had to answer questions and see if it is correct. We also did a show don't tell and we had to show what was happening in the picture and create a different picture by showing it in words. We even created our own task to do and it was related to the book Māui.

Room 1 Garden

Outside of Room 1 is a rather large garden box. We quickly noticed that it looked rather sad and awful earlier this week and planned as a class to make it our project this year.

This morning, before the school assembly, Mr. Vogt came by to talk to Mrs Moala and he had noticed the same thing!

So, in an effort to loosen the soil and hopefully begin cultivating our own garden, Mr Vogt suggested having some students fill the box with water and cover it.

We will continue to fill it for a few days (or weeks) and hopefully we will be able to see some results soon.  Stay turned to see what happens during the upcoming weeks...

Year 8 Welcoming Waiata

2019 Has Officially Begun!

The 2019 school year has officially started and the students at PES eagerly entered the school gates this morning ready to meet their new teachers.

Mr Burt began the year with the help of our new Prefects at our First Day of School Assembly.

It was during this assembly, that the students of Pt England were introduced to our 2019 school year theme: Kia pai te kotahi "Better Together." We will spend the year exploring what this means to us as individuals in the context of a class and team (family), school, community and nation.

Students will also spend Term 1 looking further into the Pt England Way as we learn how to properly manage ourselves as Pt Englanders. The students of Team 5 will also be spending some time answering the question Ko wai au? while working through the Malaga program.

Welcome to Room 1!

Room 1 is one of five classrooms that are the home to Year 7/8 students at Pt England School in Auckland, New Zealand. Every student in our block has their very own Chromebook and all of our learning can be seen on our class site with our completed assignment tasks shared on our individual blogs. We would love to have you follow our Year 7/8 learning journey this year as we work together to Learn, Create and Share on our class and individual blogs.
